This is the question we get asked most often :)
Everything you need to know about MUSE:
What is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.
It is a technology that uses pulses of light to target melanin (pigment) present in the hair, helping to weaken the root and progressively reduce growth.
With consistent use, hair grows back thinner, slower, and sparser.
How does IPL work?
IPL works thanks to a pigment in the hair called melanin. Just like a dark surface absorbs more heat on a hot day, melanin helps the hair absorb the light emitted by the device’s flashes.
This light stimulates the hair to enter its resting phase, interrupting its growth cycle. The result is smoother, progressively hair-free skin.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal devices use this technology to break the hair cycle and help reduce regrowth over time.
What is the difference between laser and IPL?
Both laser and IPL help reduce hair growth by using light that transforms into heat, acting on the hair follicle according to the natural hair growth cycle.
However, the technology used to emit this light is quite different — the main difference being the type of light used.
Simply put:
IPL devices emit a wide range of wavelengths, producing a single flash of white light. This flash may appear as orange or reddish when applied to the skin, similar to a camera flash.
In contrast, a laser uses only a single wavelength, creating a concentrated beam of light, similar to a laser pointer.
How do these differences influence treatment?
⏱ Treatment time
Because the laser beam is highly concentrated, the devices have a small treatment window.
Because IPL uses a wider flash, it has a larger treatment window, allowing it to cover larger areas at once—generally making the process faster compared to laser treatment.
💢 Level of discomfort
The concentrated laser beam is often described as more intense.
IPL, by distributing light more broadly, tends to provide a more comfortable experience.
💰 Cost
Laser technology is more expensive, especially in clinics and salons, which is reflected in the price of treatments.
IPL is, as a rule, a more affordable alternative.
🔁 Maintaining results
Laser treatment may require fewer maintenance sessions due to the intensity of its technology.
However, any light-based hair reduction method requires periodic maintenance sessions to maintain results over time.
🛡 Security
Laser light is very powerful and, when misused, can pose risks. For this reason, laser devices for home use operate at reduced power compared to professional equipment.
IPL, by using less concentrated light, is widely used in devices for home use, allowing for continuous treatments in a practical and convenient way.
In summary
IPL can offer results comparable to laser treatments, provided a consistent usage plan is followed and maintenance sessions are performed when necessary.
In return, you save time, money, and frequent trips to clinics, by performing the treatments in the comfort of your own home.
When will I start seeing results?
Most customers notice a reduction in hair growth after just 3-4 uses, and full results after 12 uses. If you notice that your hair has stopped growing, you don't need to complete all 12 sessions. You can move on to the maintenance phase.
For best results right from the start, it is ideal to use the IPL two to three times a week for the first four weeks. After that, short touch-up sessions once a month, or once every 2 months, will be sufficient.
After the initial phase, you can continue treatments according to your needs. After all, everyone is different and, as such, may need maintenance treatments at different frequencies, which is perfectly normal.
Why choose IPL technology for hair removal?
IPL, or intense pulsed light, uses strong pulses of broad-spectrum light to target the hair at the root. The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, where it is converted into heat, resulting in thinner hair growth and eventually the complete cessation of hair growth.
MUSE's IPL devices have undergone rigorous safety testing, meeting applicable European standards, and offer an effective, economical, and convenient solution compared to clinic lasers and traditional hair removal methods.
Is the IPL hair removal process painful?
The IPL hair removal process can cause some discomfort, but it is generally well tolerated by most people. The sensation is often described as a slight prickling or popping sound, similar to the touch of a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, pain tolerance varies from person to person, so some people may find it more uncomfortable than others.
To help minimize any discomfort, a cooling gel can be applied to the skin after treatment, and our device's ice cooling technology can reduce burning and irritation sensations during use.
Is this type of hair removal permanent? Will it grow back?
With complete transparency, yes, this is a possibility after treatment, since no hair removal method can be classified as "permanent." IPL is considered semi-permanent and requires maintenance treatments. Maintenance can be done once a year or even after 3 to 5 years, depending on the individual.
How often should I use the product?
We recommend using the device two to three times a week during the first month for best results. After that, you can use it once every two weeks or once a month for maintenance sessions, as needed.
Furthermore, we advise you to adapt the usage to your hair growth. If you find areas with thicker or more resistant hair, you can increase the potency level and frequency of use. Always pay attention to your skin's reaction and make adjustments to avoid any discomfort.
Are there any side effects from IPL treatment?
All MUSE Mlay devices have been independently tested for effectiveness (i.e., the ability to produce the desired outcome) and, of course, for safety. If the device is used in accordance with the instruction manual, you should not experience any adverse side effects.
You may notice some slight skin reactions immediately after treatment, such as redness or a feeling of warmth — but this is entirely normal and no cause for concern.
We recommend performing a patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before your first treatment.
If you notice any other side effects, discontinue use and contact us for guidance on the next steps.
